Johnstown Castle Estate, Museum & Gardens

Co. Wexford, Ireland

Johnstown Castle Estate located in County Wexford dates back to the 12th century. The restored castle is an example of 19th century Gothic Revival. This property is managed by the Irish Heritage Trust; it includes the Irish Agricultural Museum, and extensive walled gardens developed between 1844-1851, covering 4 acres.

1845: Memento Mori is currently on display in the Fishing Turret, built as a folly in the 1840s, and overlooks the middle lake.

Stokes layers the glass potatoes over a cairn made from locally sourced Wexford white quartz. White quartz has powerful symbolic meaning, purifying negative energy. It is often used for headstones, but also was used extensively at Newgrange, the megalithic burial chamber and Unesco site in Stokes’ native county of Meath.
